Grapes

Question
I obtained five grape seeds from fruits and after struggling with them for about a month (stratification etc...) I planted them. After about a week, four of them germinated in a pot. Now I have a different problem. Here in India, we have a very wet tropical climate. Though its winter now, it won't be very good conditions for grape vines for very long. My question is: how can I care for my vines in the Indian summer and then monsoon? I don't care about the fruits - all I want is healthy plants growing in my backyard... Please help me out. Thanks.

Answer
Greetings, Abhishek -
I am not familiar with the growing conditions in your country, but I do know that high humidity and monsoon are not favorable to growing grapevines.  That said, India has been producing grapes since the 4th century B.C., so obviously it's possible.

You did not say where in India you live, but I did some research and located what I think is an interesting paper:

Perhaps copying and pasting this link into your browser will work, as I cannot seem to turn the link into a hyperlink within the confines of this form.

One prevailing problem in your area, I suspect, is mildew. Because grapevines thrive in less humid conditions, making sure you prune the vines enough to guarantee good air circulation to cut down on mildew, which is a prime breeding condition for fungus and bacteria. Since you don't care about fruiting, when and how much you prune is not as important as it might be if you were aiming for a grape harvest.

You didn't mention whether you drip-irrigate or not, but these seems to be the favored method for watering. I also would recommend fertilizing the vines once per year with a fertilizer that is high in Nitrogen. (The fertilizer bag will have three numbers, eg. 4-10-4; the first number is for Nitrogen, so make sure that's the highest number in the sequence) - Nitrogen promotes healthy stems and leaves.

I hope I've been helpful and I wish you much luck with your grapevines!
