QuestionHi. Over the past several months, vines have made a major attempt to completely cover the fence that's around my home. What's best/easiest way to get rid of these vines and ideally prevent them from coming back?
AnswerGood day, Raphael!
Although you did not specify the types of vines "eating" your fence, there is really only one sure-fire way to get rid of these vines in a nature-friendly way, and that is to dig down deep and pull all their roots. This is such a chore, I know, but it is the only way to make sure they don't "resurface," so to speak. The other alternative is to use a post-emergent herbicide, and this will require several applications. Your choice here is whether to go with an eco-friendly herbicide such as clove-oil or soap-based contact sprays, or whether you want to use a product like Round-Up, which risks killing the plants you DO like as well as the vines you don't want. That's up to you. Personally, I don't mess around with sprays. I get a rototiller or a couple of strong teenage boys who want some spending money and I let them "have at it" until all the roots are gone. Once that's accomplished. it's a good idea to mulch the area (do they mulch in the tropics? I don't know!) and then apply some pre-emergent weed control (such as Preen) every three or four months. You may see a few stubborn leftovers, but if you keep up with yanking them out with their roots, the problem will eventually be solved for good.
Hope that is helpful. Good luck.
