Site and Climate Requirements

Choose a full-sun location with night temperatures consistently above 15°C. Bougainvillea prefers equal day/night lengths (equatorial conditions) and low rainfall—avoid low-lying, frost-prone areas. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable; plant on a mound or raised bed if soil is heavy.

Soil and Water Management

Use nutrient-rich but fast-draining soil. Water deeply but infrequently once established—this encourages deep roots and drought tolerance. Avoid saucers under pots; "wet feet" cause root rot. In containers, ensure abundant drainage holes.
