QuestionHi,
I love your website! We had 4 vines that are 10-12 feet tall and grow over our arbor. This is the 3rd summer for these. This spring one of them came up just fine and then turned brown and died. The other 3 have had a fungus which i treated. The problem now is they are turning yellow and brown. If i need to prune these will they grow back faster than they did before? Also how much should i cut back? I realize the hot days and cool nights are not good for these. Maybe some kind of fertilizer would help?
I've got too much money invested in these to loose them
thanks
AnswerHi pammysu - Usually when Trumpet Honeysuckle leaves turn yellow (and then brown), it's a sign that the vine is drought-stressed. Even though they are drought-"tolerant" (up to a point), they do prefer moist soil. Are your vines in full sun? That's another "requirement." You can try some nitrogen-based fertilizer (use about half the recommended amount on the package/bottle), but bear in mind that this will promote more foliage and fewer flowers. As for pruning, it's important to remember that Trumpet Honeysuckle flowers will only grow on "new" woody-vine growth, so any pruning you do should be done after the blooming season is over. Good luck and let me know how things go!
