QuestionHi,
I have a couple of scuppernong vines running along the fence. Underneath I have mulched with leaves. But of course weeds have found a home along the fence in the mulch too. Dollar weed but also other weeds with those long white roots. Is there any chemical to eradicate the weeds without harming the roots of the scuppernong vine?

AnswerYou're so lucky to have scuppernong grape vines; they are one of my favorites. Unfortunately, getting rid of the weeds in your mulch along the base of the fence is a tricky proposition. Most generalized weed killers also kill desirable plants, so it takes a steady hand and a stout heart to apply them near treasured shrubs and perennials. If I were you, if you aren't up to the tedious task of hand-pulling, I'd carve out some time and literally paint the weed-killer on the foliage of the weeds instead of spraying or pouring in a systemic that might harm the scuppernong roots. Some gardeners pour boiling water directly on their weeds; since it contains no toxic chemicals, it won't harm surrounding plants unless it's poured directly on their foliage/roots. I've done this with success on weeds that pop up between paving stones with great success, but I haven't done it to weeds in an actual bed. Do let me know how this turns out, and I hope I've been of some use.
