QuestionPatrician, how can I get my standard size african violets to bloom? they bloomed one time several years ago and now nothing. I give them fish fertilizer once a month and water with distilled water once a week. they are potted in african violet soil. thanks, Dee
AnswerI always tell folks violets NEED three things to be healthy: 1)Water; 2)Light; and 3)Warmth.
These are the main three. They also need humidity, but that comes into play with warmth usually. I would discontinue the fish fertilizer and start with a plant food made esp for violets. Peter's Special is a good one, as is Optimara. Remember to dilute it half strength no matter what the directions say. And, no need to fertilize until March because all houseplants need to "rest" between October and March, during winter months. Make sure you keep the soil moist, not wet, but never dry. Try to keep them in a sunny window, preferably an eastern facing one because morning sun is best, less harsh than western sun. You can mist them a few times a day. If you really want to give them a boost for humidity you can place a plastic bag over the plant for a few days, up to a week. This will greatly raise the humidity in the plant and promote healthy growth and possibly blooms. NEVER use plastic bags in summer; it could cook the plants! Also, when any blossoms fade pinch them off; this puts energy back into the plant to make more blooms. Remember that violets don't bloom continuously, but rather several times a year, with a rest period in between.
These are the basics for healthy, blooming violets. I hope I've helped.
