QuestionI have a dozen or so african violets growing on west facing window sill. They are all doing very well except for one called Antique Tapestry which is drooping. Both leaves and flowers are droopy Could you offer me some advice? We live in Maine and the house temperature is 63 Is this too cold? Thank you very much
AnswerGloria,
I'm sorry for the delay. Your question got "hidden" away in my inbox.
Anyway, yes I do think 63 degrees is much too cool for violets. They need three main things: To be WARM, MOIST and to have LIGHT. If you don't want to adjust your thermostat you could add a light or a lamp to the violets, especially in the winter months. A regular lamp would add a little heat as well as light, but you could look into lights that are specifically for African violets. They sell them at any nursery or plant department, and they aren't terribly expensive any more. If you have as many as a dozen plants I would highly recommend you do this for the well-being of all of them. These lights have many spectrums that our regular lightbulbs don't offer, and they promote growth and flowering. As far as your Antique Tapestry drooping, I don't know what to advise because I don't know how old the plant is, and if it is a special hybrid it could be rather temperamental. When both leaves and flowers droop it is a red flag. Here is the web address of the African Violet Society of America; they have extensive, encyclopedic information available, and they take questions at no charge. They really are the experts! I hope I have helped a little.
