self watering pots

Question
I use self watering pots for my violets.  One plant's stems droop over the pot while the other plant is doing fine.  Are these pots good for violets? The water is in
the outer pot and the plant is in the inner pot and the water somehow seeps through to the plant. Also, how do I feed the plant using this pot, through the water in the outer pot? Thanks

Answer
Nancy,
I also use these pots. The plant is watered by osmosis, sort of. You will notice that the inner pot is not painted or glazed, but is pure clay. That is how it absorbs the water from the outer pot. The drier the plant is the more water it takes in. I have also had the problem you speak of with a stem drooping down. It could be an older violet, and they sometimes do this. In this case you would want to repot it, making certain that you bury the stem more deeply. For some reason plants in self-watering pots seem to do this. I do not know why.  You fertilize the violets by adding the fertilizer to the water in the outer pot. The fertilizer may be powder form or liquid, but just add according to the directions. If the directions say "Five drops per quart" just adjust it to fit your pots.
I hope I've helped.
