White bugs in my african violets soil

Question
Hi Patricia, I have this african violet plant and it sits behind my sink in direct light everyday, I had to move it today cause a plumbers coming to repair my sink, but when I moved it I noticed small white bugs underneath it. I have no idea what they are, how they got there or how to get rid of them. Please Help!

Answer
Lynda,
The best I can advise is for you to go to a garden supply store and purchase an insecticide that is SAFE FOR AFRICAN VIOLETS. What you have is either white flies or spider mites, but probably white flies. They are not as destructive as spider mites, but you don't want any insects with your blooming plants. There is a home remedy that can prevent insects from invading plants. Place one clove of fresh garlic on the top of the soil of the plant, (ANY plant).  Somehow this repels most insects, but it does not kill them once you have an infestation like you have presently. Violets can live for years, for decades, if taken proper care of.
Good luck.
