white powder on bloom

Question

.006.jpg
I have an African violet collection. I keep them in a north facing window which do very well. I live in Michigan &in winter the window is cool they do not seem bothered. I have a plant in bloom & recently see a white powder on bloom. I know powdery mildew forms on leaves & pots but can it affect blooms or is this another problem?

Answer
ADDENDUM to my answer I sent earlier:
Holly, it is possible that what you see in the blooms is red spider mites.  It's difficult for me to tell from the photo, but after I sent you my original answer I began to think the white material could be the webs from spider mites.  You could rid yourself of them by spraying tepid-warm water over the blooms and/or using a Q-tip with alcohol.  However, before trying either of these contact the AVSA first.  I'm sure you'll be helped much by them.  As I said, I've never had this problem myself, but I hate to see violets lost for any reason!  The web address is at the bottom of my answer below.

Holly,
Thanks for the photo.  I have never had to deal with powdery mildew on violets before, and I feel ill-equipped to help you.  Remember, that mildew will only grow and reproduce in extra humid conditions, so unless you violets are over-watered or in very humid environment, (which is unlikely this time of year) I'm not sure it is mildew.  And, you are correct that it usually only affects foliage.

In order to help you I'm giving you the web address of the African VIolet Society of America.  They will accept questions, photos, and they are a treasure trove of info for violets only.  I've referred many people to them.  They are non-profit, and usually answer within a day or so.

Here it is:  www.avsa.org

Good luck.
