no blooms

Question
My Violets are beautiful.  They have bloomed lots in the past.  Now they are thick with beautiful green leaves but they haven't flowered for a few months.  I fertilize every time I water (once a week) with Miracle Grow African Violet food.  Am I fertilizing too much?  Why aren't they blooming?

Answer
Joann,
Your violets sound very lush and healthy to me.  Keep in mind that they won't bloom all year long. Instead, they bloom several times a year.  It just sounds as if they are taking a much needed hiatus.  If they WERE NOT healthy looking you should worry.  Keep them in good sunlight, which at this time of year should be an EAST window which gives as much morning sunlight as possible.  Evening sunlight is not very strong in winter.  Also, do not fertilize during the months of October through February.  This is considered a "dormant" period for all houseplants.  Even though violets are inside plants they still can sense that it is wintertime!  All in all, your violets sound healthy to me.  Just make sure you keep them well watered and plenty of sunlight.  I'm sure you'll see pretty little buds soon.
