persian violets

Question
i think i already e-mailed you a question, but put my wrong address.  i"m asking about how long persian violets live.  are they seasonable?  i buy one every year and they last a while and die.  do i leave them in the pot they came in?  ilove these flowers and would any thing you can tell me about them. thanks

Answer
Persian violets (Exactum) should be kept as annual plants.  You can keep them over the winter but a second flowering is not likely.

I would leave them in the pot they came in unless they grow unusually large.

Exactums prefer bright light but keep out of strong direct sunlight.

Normal room temperatures.  Keep pot on tray of moist pebbles and spray plants regularly with hot water.  (Hot water becomes much colder sprayed through a container.)

Use 20-20-20 fertilizer every two weeks as long as plant is in flower.

Soil based mixture in 5 inch pot is about as large as they will need.

Pick off flowers as they fade.  This helps flowering.
