QuestionHi:
I have AV in my office (10 pots at the moment). They have been blooming happily for ~5 years except that several of my plants start to have a "leaf problem" (even they continue to bloom). A certain leaf (esp. those at the outer most) would start showing a brown/ black spot, which eventually spread to the rest of the leaf. The resultant leaf feels soft and has a wilted look. I know I didn't over/ under water. And I usually add a little bit of fertilizer to my water so I don't think the lack of it is a problem. What can I do to save my babies?
Thanks.
AnswerTeresa,
If I am understanding you correctly, you are describing a leaf rot problem. It indeed starts slowly, maybe from a tiny spot. It could be the result of a drop of cold water, something touching the leaf, or even the leaf rubbing against a pot. This is what I have found in my cases. I don't think you have to worry about your "babies" because you can cut the affected leaf off long before it spreads. I, also have violets which have continued to bloom even though they had a rotting leaf. Just be sure to examine your violets at least weekly to ensure that they are all healthy and that no insects have set up house. Pinch off all shriveled blooms and leaves, as well. This is just part of normal maintenance. You sound like a very knowledgeable and observant grower. That's why you have had so many years of successful blooms!
