Questionthe soil of my violet smells moldy - the plant looks fine. Anything I can do except repotting with new soil?
AnswerLouise,
I am wondering what makes you think the soil is moldy? Are there any other indications other than the smell? If the plant looks fine, but the soil is truly moldy, then I think I would hold off on watering for a few days-- maybe as long as 4-5 days. That will sufficiently dry the soil out and should get rid of the moldy smell, (as well as any mold present). After doing this, if you still smell mold I would just advise you to repot the violet with fresh soil AND a new pot that has been sterilized by either wiping the inside of the pot with alcohol or a mild bleach and water solution. Make sure to rinse the solution from the pot before adding the soil or plant. When you repot make sure to inspect the roots of the plant for any brown or dark areas, as well as soft or mushy spots. If you find any of these I would suggest you cut them off with a clean knife.
Good luck.
