QuestionThis morning while preparing my AV's for watering, I noticed some very small black insects on my violets. They appeared to come from the soil when I picked them up . . however, on closer inspection, I'm not sure they didn't originate from the bottom of the leaves. What are these bugs and how can I get rid of them? I'm afraid to use any pesticide that I use outdoors.
Otherwise, my plants appear very healthy and are about to enter a bloom stage.
AnswerNorma,
First let me apologize for the long wait in answering your question. I actually had to do some research, as I have never dealt with insects on AVs. I've been lucky. However, I have dealt with many, many insects on other plants! Anyway, my source tells me that any insecticide you can purchase at a garden supply store is ok to use, AS LONG AS THE LABEL STATES IT CAN BE USED ON AFRICAN VIOLETS. For safety sakes, you might want to dilute it by 50%. I think that's what I would do. Spray the plants well, getting underneath the leaves well. Make certain that you drench the soil, also. You will want to do this chore outside. IF that is not possible, at least do it in a bathtub. Also, since cool and cold water spots leaves make sure the water you use is warm or lukewarm. There are so many brands to choose from, all from reputable companies. Just follow the label directions. It is really up to you whether you dilute or not; that was just MY little idea. I do hope this helps. Again, I am so sorry for taking so much time to answer.
