Some of my violets leafs grow flat. and some grow tall. Can you tell me why this is ? what I need to do to keep the leaves from growing tall. There not to pretty when the leaves are taller than the flowers. Thank You. Sandy
Answer -
Sandy,
When you say "flat" and "tall" I imagine you mean the leaves are kind of drooping downward, and the others are like "reaching" upward. Is this correct?
Could you possibly reply to me. Also, I need to know if this is on the same plant, or different plants. This is very important. Because, if it is on the same plant then it could be a problem. But, it doesn't have to be fatal! We can get through it. I will look for your reply.
AnswerSandy,
I don't know exactly why this happens. It seems that some varieties of violets have this problem more than others. The main thing for you to look for is light exposure. If a violet's leaves are reaching upward it generally means they are "reaching out" for more light. Consequently, if the leaves are turned downward it sometimes means they have too much light. It your plants are in a window, (and in October I am certain they are), it is unlikely that any violet is getting TOO MUCH light. If the amount of sunlight is sufficient, as in 4-5 hours daily of indirect sunlight, you can most likely rule out this as the problem, AND if you are fertilizing your violets properly, keeping them fairly moist, and the humidity is adequate, then any violets that continue with the leaves upward or downward may just be particular to that variety, and in African violets there are hundreds of varieties! I have this problem myself from time to time, and it always turns out to be a specific violet that does it. It is not a very attractive look, is it? Good luck to you.
