Agapanthas

Question
I live in zone 4.  How do I "save" my dwarf Agapanthas.  They are still in their original 12 inch pot -- and bloomed beautifully.  I have cut the deadheads off and would like to winterize the pot and bring back to life next year.  Thank you.

Answer
Fertilize now to make stronger, larger bulbs.  After a frost, bring the pot inside into the coolest location above freezing you can provide (I winter my Agapanthus over on an enclosed, unheated porch, which goes down to 32 degrees.  Cool temperature lowers light requirements so even a dark corner is okay.  Water very sparsely, allowing the soil to become dry between waterings.

When you see new growth beginning in the spring, put the pot in a sunny window and begin watering and fertilizing.  Agapanthus tolerates some frost so you can move the pot back outside when the weather warms up (in May here in zone 5) without having to worry about frosty nights.
