QuestionWill my hydrangea bloom again? I bought it in a pot and sat it outside on the balcony of my apartment (it has partial shade throughout the day). I watered it every day. Last summer was very hot though (i live in southern California)and a lot of leaves dried out. but with watering and removing of old leaves the plant survived even though the blooms died last September. The plant grew since then about 3 inches and there're a lot of new leaves coming its way. It looks healthy and green noe, but no blooms. Will it bloom again? And what can i do to keep it from drying out this summer?
AnswerYour hydrangea is most likely H. macrophylla. There is no reason why it would not bloom again. You can fertilize it with a fertilizer formulated for rhododendrons and other acid-loving plants. Too much nitrogen will promote foliar growth at the expense of flowers.
As to keeping it watered, that will be a challenge. Mulch it heavily and water deeply once a week and whenever it starts to look droopy. You could check your garden store for drip rings meant for trees.
