QuestionHi Viktoria,
I have several Lace Cap Hydrangea plants that are very healthy looking. Unfortunately I do not get many blooms and the blooms that I do get are small.
Sould I be pruning them in the fall?
Thank You,
Louise
AnswerLacecaps are not hardy where I am, so I have no personal experience. I believe, though, that they bloom on previous year's growth, so pruning in the fall or in the spring means removing next year's blossoms. I would only remove any dead growth and trim the remaining branches back to the first strong set of buds. You could also thin the shrub by removing some of the weaker stems. This, plus a fertilizer meant for acid-loving plants (Hollytone is one) should do the trick.
