Pond maintence

Question
I have a semi rigid 165 gallon pond liner. The pond uses well water. Currently we have 5 goldfish and do not plan on adding any more. We also use 10 snails for clean up. I would like to add a filter system but am confused as to the most bang for my money and the job at hand. I am in South Carolina and the pond gets quite a bit of direct sunlight each day.
Currently there is only one rush type plant. We are using a 330 gpm pump to recirculate the water in a waterfall type deal with only about a 6 inch lift out of the pond.
I have looked at mechanical and UV light filters but with so many on the market, what do I go for. My main concern is a good clean, healthy, pond with good clarity, not necessarily crystal clear.
If I go the UV route do I use it 24 hours or just part time? Do you have any idea how long a bulb lasts? What of biological and mechanical filtering? I have gone through many books but they just don't give enough info.
Thanks, CONFUSED.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

The life of the uv light would depend on the maker.
Check with manufacturer for more info.
I prefer biological filters, there are a good number of them on the market.
Try Aquascape Designs's website for more info.
The lenght of time for using UV lights will also depend on how potent they are.

Keep in touch

Carlo
