QuestionThree of my koi have died & i just cant reach them to pull them out of my pond. How long can they remain in my pond before trouble starts?
AnswerIt depends on a number of things - the mass of the koi, the volume of the pond, and the pond temperature. For example, a 1" koi in a 10,000 gallon pond at 60 degrees F won't be much of a problem ever. A 2 foot long koi in 1000 gallons at 70 degrees F is going to start causing problems in just a day or two. That same koi at 35 degrees F during the winter won't be doing much in the way of decomposition until it warms up above 45 or 50 degrees F.
No matter the fish's size, pond volume, or the pond temperature, you should try to get the fish out of there as soon as you can. If the pond is not frozen, you can get in with hip waders and gloves to protect yourself if it's cold. If the pond is frozen over, you'll have to wait for an opening and try to stick in a long net or grabbers.
I'm sorry about your koi and hope you can remove them soon.
Good luck!
