QuestionI recently read in a Koi magazine about a problem with Koi involving the female retaining her eggs. I have never heard of that and the article did not discuss this problem in any detail. I have a female that has been pregnant fat, very fat, since last Spring. I was beginning to worry that this was what was wrong with her, but she has always been very healthy acting and a voracious eater. But she did not look fat-fat. Actually, today she finally gave up her eggs and everyone in the pond had massive quantities of fresh protein. But I would still like to know more about this malady, what causes it and cures it. I cannot imagine having to squeeze the eggs out myself or something. I prefer to leave that to the males in the pond. My Koi have always been good breeders. I started out with buying 4 fish about 9 years ago. I now have about 30 in a way too small pond. Just today my new pond was finished and started. It is 15x7x4 that will stream into my first pond that is a 7x2 round pond. Picture about 30 Koi and several shubunkin in that small pond. Some of the Koi are 10-12 inches long. So I know they will be so excited to move into the big pond soon. That will be a fun project, catching and moving all the Koi. The shubunkin will stay in the little pond. I am SO excited with my new pond. I cannot wait to play in it.
AnswerHi,
female koi being eggbound sometimes does happen as a rule if the koi do not spawn the femal naturaly ingests the eggs and she will be okay on the occasion of it being eggbound there is not a lot you can do apart from manually stripping her of her eggs but that is really left to an expert to do, as if it is not done correctly the female could be damaged. I hope your fish are happy in their new home.
