Small shallow water fountain

Question
In your answer to my previous question, you mention the following fish for my little fountain pond: paradise fish, rosy red minnows, zebra danios, white cloud mountain minnows, platies, guppies. Do these types of fish have a tendency to jump out? How far below the top of the little pond should I have the water level. Also, what do you recommend to protect the fish in case a predators would get to the pond? Is there a net type thing I could utilize?

Answer
All fish can jump out.  Some fish can jump more than others.  If you can have a lip at least two inches above the water line, that will help a log.  Of the fish I listed, the paradise fish is the most likely to jump out.  The others can as well.  I had a white cloud mountain minnow jump out of an indoor pond years ago with a 3 inch or so lip.  You could also net the pond to keep fish from jumping (which also keeps out predators) but that detracts from how nice the pond/fountain looks.  "Bird" or "pond" netting can be used over the pond to keep out predators and keep fish in.  Secure it to either side of the pond with bricks, rocks, etc.  The more things (plants, pots, objects) that you put into the pond, the more places the fish would have to hide from predators.
