QuestionI have a 2500 gallon pond that was built this year, winter is coming and i am not sure how to winterize the water plants. I do not want to lose them. I have waterlilies, water hyatitis, mexican petunia and other above water plants. I am planing on leaving the fish in the pond. the weather is 0 to -10 at night and 30 above in the daytime. Can you help me save these plants so i can enjoy them next year.
AnswerHi Diane,
Thanx for your question. Some of your plants will be difficult to over winter but you can try. If the waterlilies are not tropical they should do fine in a pond that is at least 18-24 inches deep. I think you are talking about water hyacinths and these are tropical and cannot be left outdoors. They however, do not grow well indoors. I had one survive for a couple of months in a well lit basement but it eventually turned brown and began to die as it requires bright sunlight. Some plants like the Mexican petunia, papyrus and umbrella palms can be planted in a pot and you just keep the soil real moist. Other floaters like water lettuce and azolla can be kept in a tub of water in a well lit area of the basement. Most marginal plants like cattails, horsetail, arrowhead and water irises are hardy enough to be left alone outside during the winter. I have all of these and similar conditions to yours and I have no problem. I hope this helps. If not, please feel free to post a followup.
thx,
Tom
