Geese in a pond

Question
We have painted turtles and snappers. Some of the snappers get very large. Our son says that turtles don't eat fish but I was not sure. The geese are really messing things up for the grandchildren. Do any of the products you can buy to deter geese help? They have one with a blinking light on it that floats in the water. Its about 350.00. Thanks Mary

Question -
Could you tell me if there is anything we can do to keep Canadian Geese out of our pond? Our grandchildren play around it and now there are quite a few geese there after we leave and their remains are everywhere and its dirty for the children. We heard that putting a floating Swan might help. Please help! Also we have tons of turtles this year and some are huge. Can they eat the fish we have in the pond? We had lots of beds and lots of little fish this year.

How big is your pond?  Putting up fake swans, alligators, etc. may deter them at least for a short time.  I know with our local larger lakes, the only thing that really works is trained dogs.  I've always wanted a border collie myself; they're the best geese dogs.  What species of turtles do you have?  Turtles do eat fish.  You have beds of what, eggs, plants?  Good luck with your pond!

Answer
Snappers love to eat fish.  Painteds will eat a few small ones too.  I don't know if it would work but the scarecrow thing sometimes works to deter large birds.  It senses motion and sprays the animal (any human too).  There are also motion detectors that make noise that might have some effect.  Here's one place selling the scarecrow thing (I've never been to their site so can't comment on the company which I guess is a UK one):

Good luck deterring the geese!
