Fountain

Question
The fountain the question was refering to, is the Captain Cook Memorial Jet.

Situated in Canberra, Australia, the fountain is in the middle of a lake (Lake Burley Griffin). It suspends up to 6 tonnes of water in the air at any time, reaching a maximum height of 147 metres (482 feet).

Not entirely sure about the temperature, somewhere between 10-30 degrees Celsius (50-86 Fahrenheit).

The fountain also contains a anemometer nearby (used to measure wind speed and direction). The fountain is automatically shut off if the wind speed is greater than 30km/h for a sustained period of 30 seconds in any direction. Thus preventing any spillage of water onto any side of the lake.

Would there be any water loss in this situation?
If so, would this have to do with evaporation of the water?
Again if so, how does the use of the fountain cause more water to be evaporated?

Thankyou for your time

Question -
I was wondering if using a water feature such as a water fountain, has any water loss?
Answer -
Yes.

And that would depend on the height of the fountain, the temperature and wind speed.
Good Luck!

Answer
Yes,

There would be friction of the water against the air,
that would cause the water molecules to be dispersed (like any liquid in a spray bottle).
Some of it would fall back in a mist, and some would be so small as to become vaporized.

So, the greater the speed of the water, the more molecules would be dispersed in the air.

Good Luck!

Carlo
