QuestionOver the last weeks 2 of my Golden Orfs have died. Although I had my pump off through the winter they seemed OK. Then I noticed they stayed in the shallow part of the pond. I started the pump running 3 days ago but today another has died, the other fish types are all OK. What can I do to stop the rest of my Orfs dieing.
AnswerBrian,
Thanx for your question. I used to have some golden orfs in my pond. They seem to be more sensitive to changes in the water, temperature and conditions than other ornamental fish (mainly goldfish). I have always lost my orfs and I quit buying them. I don't think it is an oxygen question because all of the fish could be affected. Did you notice any slime, fungus or blemishes on the fish? Were their eyes extended or were they bloated in any way? They may have had an infection the other fish didn't get. Like I said though, they seem to me to be more sensitive to changes in temperatures and water conditions than other fish. I have had them survive over winter only to die in the spring. One thing I would suggest is to go to the place where you bought the fish or to a store that sells ornamental pond fish and ask them if they know of anything that would be adversely affecting the fish. I hope this helps.
thx,
Tom
