freezing waterfall

Question
RE
I'm placing a waterfall (5'fiberglass fountain) that has a recirculating pump in the base. Is there any way to prevent this system from freezing in the winter here in Boise. Temp. range from a normal 30 degrees to an accasional 10 degree night. Would a small amount of anti-freeze work or could that damage the pump? Any suggestions
Thanks, Ed

Answer
To withstand those temperatures the pond needs to be at least 30 inches deep. If it is you can keep the pump running all year. As long as you have running water it will not freeze. If it is less than that it is a gamble. Anti freeze would work but could be costly depending on the size of thepond at the bottom. It may also be an evironmental issue next year. Anti freeze would affect any fish oe plants you have. You would need at least a 25 percent antifreeze/ water mixture.
