soothing sound of water

Question

So, are you saying that a 25 gallon/hour solar pump would work with such a small reflection pool?  If so, I really wouldn't care to search for one wihtout a pump.

Dear Leigh,

Thank you for your incredibly quick reply.   It just so happens, I just got home from Home Depot where I was looking at ponds & saw a "Reflection Pond" that really caught my fancy.   I would've bought it on the spot, but wasn't sure it'd be compatible with the solar water fountain pump I've got my eye on.  I'm sure this little Reflection pond's pump uses electricity, which I really don't want to be bothered with.   I've got my heart set on the solar fountain.   But, since that can pump 25 gallons/hour, and this Reflection pond is really small (28" diameter, 21" depth), I don't know if they're compatible.  I've pasted descriptions below.  I'd really appreciate your opinion on the compatibility of these two items.  As for me wanting a bigger & bigger pond, with fish and all that, no, you don't know me.   I like simple best.  I got rid of a 52" deep 18 ft. diameter swimming pool & instead got an 8 ft. diamer, 27" blow-up version.   I LOVE it.  Enough for me to cool off, just big enough for me to relax on a raft and oh so much simpler to clean & maintain.   I've had fish before & don't like them & all the mess & work that goes with them.   As for speakers in the backyard instead, no that wouldn't do either.   You see, all I want is a special little place for me to retreat to.   If these 2 items aren't compatible, my neighbor has a preformed pond sitting upside down in his backyard.   The previous neighbor sold the house to him with the pond full of fish.   The new guy didn't want it, so I could probably have it for the taking (I gave him my old swimming pool which was only 2 years old).   I saw this exact pond at Home Depot & I also saw it online for $200.  So, it's a decent size, but I'd want to keep it as maintenance-free as possible.  That DEFINITELY means no fish.   Whether or not water plants make it easier or harder to keep clean, I don't know.   I was hoping that just floating this 25 gallon/hr. water fountain would be enough to circulate the water & therefore keep it clean.   But, that's what I'd like to know from you, because I have no idea.

Dear Leigh,

I would like to create a place of solace in my backyard, using the relaxing sound of water.  I am interested in solar power to achieve that.  I've found an interesting looking floating solar fountain that looks like it would do the trick. It can pump up to 25 gallons/hour.  Now all I need is the pond, I guess.  I'd prefer something not too big, and not expensive.  I'd like to perhaps use rocks & stones in it -  maybe the water from the floating fountain would land on them?   I have absolutely no knowledge or expertise in this area.   I really have no interest in putting fish in it & I'd like to keep it as maintenance-free as possible.   I sure would appreciate your advice.
Thanks!
Sue

You probably want a preformed pond. Go to Home Depot or the equivalent in your area get one that tickles your fancy. Dig the hole according to instructions, lay down the sand and back fill. You also have the option of digging the pond the size and shape you want andlay down the approriate sized liner usually black. Surround the pond with rock or something else heavy to anchor the liner on the outer edges and stand the hose up from the rocks and experiment until you get the desired affect. The only problem with this scenario is before the end of the year is over you will want fish, plants and who knows what, you will now have to dig deeper get a new liner or a bigger preformed pond a new pump and who knows what. My suggestion is put a good sized pond or get a nature tape or cd and put he speakers in the back yard to hear the sound of water. You really have to decide what you want or this pond will cost you a fortune if you are not careful because you will never be happy until you get it perfected.

Sorry for being on the harsh side but search your soul for what you really want, it  will save you money in the long run. I constantly get people wanting to know how they can build their pond bigger economically. Ponds become an obseesion not a hobby. Youe can build an
8x 10 pond using a liner , filter and pump for about $800 and a some hard work.

I am sure you can buy 1 of those reflection ponds that you want without the pump. If not at Home Depot something very similar somewhere else. Just buy the pond only and then you can use the solar pump you want. As for plants you should have at least some floating plants to take some of the nutrition out of the water to minimze algaie growth. Sunshine and nutrients spur on algaie growth.

Answer
Yes, you can use the 25 GPH pump no problem, what I am saying is why spend the additional money for a pump you don't use? Ultimately the decision is yours. If you are happy with that go for it. I just hate to see people spend extra money for things they don't need or want. You may be able to sell the electric pump to a friend.
