Peach pit variety question

Question
I was reading your answer to the propagation of the pit. What I would like to know is I have a pit from a white peach (from farmer's mkt) Should I expect to get a white peach if the tree is successful?

Also, curious to know, with all the GM of fruits and veg. do you think it makes a difference if it's organic vs. grocery store?

Thanks

Kelly

Answer
Hi Kelly,
Thanx for your question.  If your white peach is a hybrid, it's no telling what you will get.  Or you may get a variation of the peach that looks similar but tastes different, matures at a different time, is less hardy, doesn't keep as long after being picked.  It's hard to say.  Sometimes the farmer will know what variety the peach is.  Most stone fruit grown in the USA are hybrids which means if you start the seed, the results will be variable.  That's not to say it won't be tasty or edible.  Recently, a friend began sharing peaches with me off a tree he grew from the seed on a hybrid peach.  These peaches are very delicious.

Organic fruit and vegetables are not grown from genetically modified (GM) seed.  Most organic growers and growers who use organic practices but aren't officially certified are vehemently opposed to genetic modification.  You can get some perfectly edible fruit and vegetables that are quite nutritious from the grocery store.  Always wash and properly store all fruits and vegetables whether you get them at the store, the farmers market or your own backyard.  Generally, the nutritional value is similar between organic and supermarket food with some variations due to organic practices that involve the appropriate application of organic fertilizer and harvesting at peak times.  Some supermarket fruits and vegetables tend to be not fully ripe or have been sitting for a number of days in which nutritional value is lost.  the problem is, a lot of stores start selling stuff labeled organic and then they put a high premium on it.  You should be prepared to pay higher prices for organic because the farmer puts more of his/her time and money into producing the crop where as corporate farms use cheap chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticies to produces mass quantities of fruit and vegetables in as little time as possible sacrificing, flavor and nutrition.  I hope this helps.
Tom
