QuestionHi Tom,
I have just a quick question about the seed pods that the cypress tree grows. I'm pretty sure the seeds go with the pod, but the pods that I have, if they are pods at all, are still green. How would I get the seeds from the pod at this point? Let them dry from the sun or just plant them in the ground just like a seed?
Appreciate the help.
AnswerHi Ben,
Thanx for your question. First of all, do you know what kind of cypress tree you have? Yes, you are correct that the seeds are inside the cones or pods. If the pods are green, the seed is most likely not yet ripe and will not be viable. Allow the seed pods to ripen and start to open up on the tree and you should be able to retrieve some seeds before the cone falls to the ground. Even cones on the ground will have some seed inside. The next thing you do is either allow the seed to germinate naturally outdoors by allowing them to go through a cold period (which is required of most cypress). That means planting the seed 1/2 inch deep in a seed bed kept clear of weeds and grass and allowing the seed to lie dormant through fall and winter. The seeds should germinate in the spring. If there is no regular moisture, be sure to water the seed bed in the fall and winter. You can imitate this my putting the seed inside damp paper towels and sealing them inside a plastic baggie and leaving them in the fridge for about 90 days. After the 90 days, remove the baggie, take out the seeds and plant in pots, half inch deep. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and warm. Germination will be sporadic and occur over several weeks. I hope this helps.
