QuestionWe have a lilac tree that has tipped from the wind and weather this year. I would like to transplant it. It is about 10 years in the same spot. Should I just take cuttings off the established trunks and discard the tree or can I move the whole thing?
Thanks, Kathy in buffalo, ny
AnswerHi Kathy,
Thanx for your question. Here is what I would do, and have done. I would prefer doing this in the early fall, but if you must, do it now, before it gets hot. Cut the shrub severely back to about 12-18 inches tall. Dig up the root ball. Transplant in the desired spot by digging a hole for the rootball, deeper and wider so the shrub isn't sticking up awkwardly higher than where it was planted. Cover with soil. Side dress with well-composted manure. Soak the shrub a couple times a week if no regular rain for the next two weeks. Side dress again, with well-composted manure in mid-summer. It should be fine. I hope this helps.
