QuestionThis big leaf philodendron is 30 years old and has been in a large pot that sits on my driveway during the spring and summer. During the coldest weather it stays in the garage. It is about 41/2 ft by 4. I can't put it in a larger pot. I live in Virginia Beach, Va where we get all the seasons full force! Can I plant this plant in the ground in my area without hurting it?
AnswerYes you can, but I would not advise transplanting it until spring. The cold weather would cause transplant shock, which could possibly harm the plant. When you do transplant in the spring, I would recommend planting it as close to the house as possible. You can then give it additional protection by covering the roots with shredded leaves in late fall.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Mike
