QuestionHello My name is Dustin and I am a member of the Arbor Day Foundation. I would like to know the easiest but ensured way to grow Laurel oaks from acorns. I live in Dunnellon,FL, Zone 9.
Thanks,
Dustin
AnswerHi Dustin,
Thanx for your question. Quercus laurifolia supposedly doesn't require cold stratification from what i have read. That means the seeds shouldn't need longterm exposure to cold, damp conditions in order to break dormancy and germinate. Whereas most oaks (Quercus) do require cold stratification.
To ensure that you have ripe, viable seeds, gather acorns that have already fallen off the tree. Make sure the acorns are free of pests, fungus, etc. Drop the seeds in a container of water for 24 hours. Any that are not viable, will float. Discard these. Plant the good acorns 1 inch deep in pots and leave outside for the winter. Keep them watered but not standing in water. The seedlings will emerge in the spring time, once the weather warms up. Germination will be variable so be patient. Some may pop right up and others may not germinate until summer.
I hope this helps.
Tom
