Follow-up to an earlier answer you gave on sycamore cuttings

Question
We have a large sycamore stump that has a new tree growing out of one side.  We are about to grind the stump, but is there any way to save the new tree?  I had read in one answer you gave on Sycamore cuttings that the suckers can be transplanted?  How do I do that if it is growing out of the side of a large stump?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Scott,
Thanx for your question.  If the sucker growing out of the stump has roots, it can be easily detached from the tree with a sharp, sterilized knife and then potted up until it forms a good network of roots.  If it is just new growth coming out of the stump itself, that's going to be more difficult.  You might be able to cut the sucker off and root it with rooting hormone.  I'm going to refer you to our tree expert Jim Hyland.  Jim has many years with the U.S. Forestry Service.  You can access Jim by going back to Home/Garden and click on Trees and then click on Trees again.  I hope this helps.
Tom
