Tulip tree

Question
Ive had a tulip tree planted in my garden now for about12/13 years.   It was about two foot tall when I planted it, it is now
about 20ft tall, but in all that time it has not flowered.   Can you help me. Thank you.

Answer
The problem is definitely a nutrient imbalance in your soil. When annuals are not blooming, including trees, you need to add phosphorus to your soil.  Phosphorus is the second number in the NPK nutrient ratio found on the packaging of fertilizers. A good ratio for flowering plants is 5-10-10. Also, stay away from fertilizers high in nitrogen, the first number in the ratio.  Nitrogen promotes lush foliage at the expense of flowering.

Most garden centers sell a fertilizer applicator tool that allows you to apply the fertilizer deep into the soil along the perimeter of the tree. The applicator has a spike the penetrates the soil to get the fertilizer directly to the roots. You can either purchase one of these, or work a dry fertilizer into the soil. This should correct your problem.

Good luck, and have a good weekend.

Mike
