north fork pine seeds

Question
lets try this again..lol how do I start new plants from the seed of the northfork pine, when do they produce seed cones and how do i prepare the seed for planting, ive read in your other article it takes some time and prep .sent you an email last night and you replyed it was not your expertise, possibly you responded to the wrong question, thanks   linda

Answer
It takes years before pine trees produce seed cones. My experience has always been that until the tree reaches 10' or more, it generally will not produce. That is usually between 3 to 5 years, depending on the conditions.

Once they do produce seed cones, you want to store the seed in a dry but cool area for at least 6 months. This simulates the dormant period needed. You can even refrigerate the seed. But the storing temperature must be between 35F and 55F.

Once the seed has gone through dormancy, you can plant it in a good potting medium in a 12" container. You will then care for it as you would any other young tree or plant.

Sorry about the original question. I misunderstood what you were asking.

Good luck, and feel free to write again if you have more questions.

Regards,

Mike
