QuestionI have a giant philodendron that is about 2' tall that I would like to transplant to another part of the yard. How can I do this ... or can I?
Also, I have purchased about 4 over the last couple years and none have been "Giant" philodendrons. Any way I can tell which is which? (the one I want to move has shot-up like a weed!)
Thanks bunches in advance
AnswerJoe, you need to dig at least 1'-2' deep and the same diameter as the span of the lowest set of branches. Make sure you keep as much of the root ball as possible, and do not transplant the philodendron deeper than it is now. Use a fertile potting soil to fill in the hole after transplanting, Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil or no more than 2" above.
Be advised, regardless of how diligent you are, transplanting an established plant from one location to another always sets the tree back several weeks as it recovers from transplant shock. Just be sure to keep the plant watered regularly. Do not fertilize for the first 30 days to prevent burning the roots. If cared for properly, the plant will recover just fine and adapt to it's new location.
In regard to distinguishing one plant from another, I would need the name of the genus you purchased. There are differences, but they are distinct to each variety of this plant.
Good luck, and have a great week.
