rowan trees

Question
QUESTION: I have a Rowan tree in my back yard...noticed at the beginning of summer three little trees growing underneath in the mulch...I took them out carefully and put them in soil in big pots...they are growing nicely....I hope they live so I can plant them in my garden at the chalet the birds will love them....my question is what should I do with them this winter....? thanks for your time...this website is extra...

ANSWER: Hi Lucie,
Thanx for your question.  The seedlings should be fine if you place them somewhere, where they are protected from the cold, north wind.  You should also shield them with a straw mulch.  But, these trees are very hardy.  Because they are young, the added protection will give them a better chance of survival.  Additionally, allow them to be covered with snow.  Snow is a perfect insulator and will protect the saplings from below zero temperatures.  I hope this helps and good luck with your trees!

QUESTION: they are now in pots should I leave them like that or plant them in the ground

Answer
Hi Lucie,
Thanx for the question.  If you have a place you'd like to plant the rowans now, I would.  If not, you can protect them as I described above.  Another way you can protect them is put them in an unheated garage after they go dormant.  Just water them once a week.  But, I'd go ahead and plant them now if at all possible.  In the fall, mulch them up really good.  Between the mulch and snow, they'll be fine.  I hope this helps.
