QuestionI recently went to a nursery and was going to buy a tree. I went home to talk to husband and he said to check around. The next nursery said that unless it was grown where I would live the chance of survival was not good. She said the best thing was to find someone with the tree and collect the seedlings or seeds. I knew where one was and collected about 15 of them. I have them in a pot growing but, I am not sure if they will make it. If I do get one to grow since it is June here. Should I winterize it in my garage? And at what size do I want to actually plant the tree. I live in Zone 6 (missouri) They also had a sappling growing near it. I had permition to dig up it up if I want. Would that work better for me? And is this a good time of year to plant it?
AnswerHi Kelly,
thanx for your question. It sounds to me like you want to grow a mimosa tree in your yard and not in a pot, correct? If you have seedlings in a pot now, you don't need to do anything special but keep them watered and in full sun. After the first frost, put the pot somewhere protected from the cold north wind like against a wall or under a shrub or in an unheated garage or cellar. Water once a week to keep up moisture. The best time to plant saplings is in the spring. I hope this helps.
