QuestionMike, I'm not sure my question is in your category, but I don't know where to turn. I have a large oak tree in my back yard. Most years a couple little trees will sprout in the area. This year there are at least a hundred. They range from a few inches to a foot high. How can I get rid of them without digging them up or trying to pull them up one at a time. Is there some kind of herbicide I can use without harming the big tree? Thanks for your time.
AnswerAlthough you can use a weed killer (one labeled as safe for grass), I have found that by simply mowing them over a period of a few weeks, they eventually die off.
If you do use a spray, just be sure to not get any of the solution directly on the tree. But as with any plant or weed, constant pruning near the base will eventually weaken the seedling and kill it. If they're in the lawn, mowing will accomplish this over time. It they're near the tree base, using a weeding hoe is very effective.
Good luck, and have a nice weekend.
Mike
