Planting trees Mediterrranean

Question
Hello,

I have been told that it is a waste of time to plant seeds in the Northern Mediterranean, but to plant young trees instead, along with mulch. I am currently considering planting young fig-trees, young tangerine-trees, plus any plum-bearing treees/bushes. Any particular advice?

Answer
When planting young trees, dig a hole slightly deeper than that height of the root ball. Fill the hole with water and allow it to fully drain. If it takes longer than a couple of hours, choose a different location. Place the root ball into the hole and back fill it with organic soil. This would be any combination of peat, aged manure, and compost. Only a few inches of the root ball should be above ground level. You will then need to stake the tree to ensure it grows straight vertically. Mulch around the base of the tree with 2" of shredded bark. Water again very deeply.

This is all you need to do for the first few months other than ensuring the tree is watered twice per week. After three months, apply a balanced fertilizer. You will want to do this again in late fall.

By next spring, the roots should be established and the tree should grow to full maturity.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards.

Mike
