yucca plant

Question
We recently planted a red yucca plant in our back yard in TX. We had seen them in nearby landscapes and thought they were just beautiful.  When we bought ours it had flowers on the long stalks and seed pods.  Now there are no flowers. Ive researched about the pods and am going to try to plant seeds but I cant find any info regarding pruning the stalk and if more flowers will bloom this year. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Bob,
Thanx for your question.  The red yucca is a great plant and very popular in the Southwest but will also grow in many other parts of the U.S.  The botanical name is Hesperaloe parviflora.  It is a perennial and pruning off the flower stalk will generally not result in a rebloom.

Starting Hesperaloe parviflora is not difficult from seed. Use a light, well draining propagation mix, sow the seeds about 1/4" deep. Germination takes about 2-4 weeks keeping the soil warm about 80癋. Seedlings will take about 3 years to reach blooming size.

I hope this helps.
