QuestionQUESTION: I have 2 emerald queen maples. I rate up as much 'whirly-bird' seed in the fall. Early spring I put down a pre- emergent crabgrass preventer. But every year I get hundreds of seeds that germinate and begin to grow.Is there some way to stop this ?
ANSWER: Hi Leo,
Thanx for your question. If you're using a pre-emergent crabgrass preventer, it's probably not rated for broadleaf plants so, I would try Preen?as this product will prevent the germination of most seeds from broadleaf and grass plants. Preen?prevents germination of seeds but does not control existing weeds or plants. There are products made by Preen?that control weeds around existing vegetable gardens so keep that in mind. Anything already germinated is not going to be controlled by Preen? I hope this helps.

QUESTION: I'm sorry the main thing I left out , is these maple tree seeds/ sprouts are in my lawn.
AnswerHi Leo,
Thanx for the additional information. I think that the crab grass pre-emergent is not effective on the maple seedlings because it is not a broadleaf pre-emergent. Preen?should do the trick. Pull up the Preen?website http://www.preen.com/. There's no way you'll get all the seeds with the rake. Some of the seeds will get lodged in the soil in cracks or animals/birds will redeposit them or the wind will blow some back. Also, a couple of lawnmower swaths should also do the trick. I hope this helps.
