Mimosa seeds

Question
I live in southern CA Riverside County area.   Last July/August (2010) I gathered bunch of mimosa seed pods and allowed them to dry out and embrittle.  So now I have a bunch of seeds that must be ready for planting.  My question: When is the best time to plant them?

Answer
Hi George,
Thanx for your question.  First off, mimosa (Albizzia julibrissin) can be considered an invasive species in many parts of the U.S.  I checked USDA for California and I did not see the species mentioned but I have seen reference to it in other California gardening and horticultural forums.  This plant is a member of the legume family and it sprouts rapidly once it has been planted about 1/2 inch deep, kept warm and damp but not soggy.  It will germinate in 5-10 days.  Wait until the seedlings are a couple inches tall and then transplant to separate pots.  Acclimate the seedlings when moving outdoors by placing in the shade for 7-10 days.  Then plant in direct sun.  The best time to plant is in the Spring (now).  I hope this helps.
Tom
