QuestionMy wife has frozen the red seeds from the Saucier Mag.(appx 1 year) Now she would like to plant. Has she killed them or will they sprout after thawing and planting? we live about 70 mi.N/W of Memphis,Tenn. What type of soil and planting inst. are recommended. Thanks for any help you can give.
AnswerHi Eric,
Thanx for your question. Although it is not recommended to freeze the seeds, one can usually cold treat or vernalize (stratify) seeds by simply placing the seeds in a damp paper towel, seal it in a ziploc bag and place in the fridge for 2-3 months. There's a good chance that your seeds will not germinate if they have been frozen for a year but I think you should go ahead and try. Plant them in a pot of good potting soil and keep it moist but not soggy. Make sure it is warm. If the seeds are going to germinate, it may take them a couple of months so be patient. If nothing has come up by the onset of summer, pitch the pot and start over. If the seeds do germinate, wait until the seedlings are large enough to handle and then gently prick out and move to separate pots. When introducing the individual seedlings to the outdoors, place them in the shade for about ten days to acclimate them and then plant in full sun. I hope this helps.
