fruit trees started from seeds at home..

Question
Can home started fruit plants from store-bought fruit seeds bear fruit eventually? I have some apple seeds starting to sprout (PinkLady)that came from organic plants grown in Washington. They were so delicious, i tried to start them with very moist soil, right out of the apple, and was really surprised it worked!
But if I even get them to grow successfully, will they ever bear fruit?

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, you can grow fruit trees from seed from fruit from the store as you are now experiencing.  Here's where issues develop.  Eventually, the trees will produce fruit.  Depending upon the varieties as early as three years but usually, 5-7 years.  Most fruit bought in U.S. grocery stores are the result of grafted hybrids.  There are some heirloom apples and other fruit being sold in stores now and if in deed these fruit are the result of open pollinated varieties, there should be little variation amongst the plants and the produce.  In the case of hybrids though, variation amongst the plants and fruit can be be very wide.  That means some of the plants will have acceptable fruit and others will have mediocre and even low-quality fruit.  The same thing goes for the life span of the tree, hardiness, productivity, vigor, etc.  Hybridizers pick different variables for instance, one hybridizer may choose to try to get a more tart apple or an apricot that is resistant to early frosts.  So, when using seed from a hybrid fruit, most of the progeny will throw back to prior generations of less vigor and quality.  I've had fruit from trees grown from the seeds of hybrids and have not had bad experiences.  The fruit was good enough for me.  It's just something to think about but indeed yes, your fruit tree seedlings will eventually bear fruit.  Good luck.

I hope this helps.
Tom
