Cherry germination in tropics

Question
Hi there! I live in Puerto Rico island, and we don't have cherry or anything from that group of fruits naturally occurring hear in the tropics. But I heard about germinating them in the fridge as possible. My question is if they will produce fruits when they mature. And what things I need to wash out for. Thank for you help in advance and excuse my English.

Answer
Hi Misael,
Thanx for your question.  Your English is fine too!  You can germinate a cherry seed in the refrigerate but you will probably not have much success growing a cherry tree in Puerto Rico due to the tropical climate.  Cherries require a cold/chill period to grow, bloom and set fruit.  The chill period is usually several hundred hours of temperatures around 40癋/4癈.  There may be some cherry cultivars with lower chill requirements but I'm not aware of them.  I'm realy not a fruit tree expert.  What I would recommend to you is to contact SEA, Servicio de Extens韔n Agr韈ola.  Here's a link below.

They may be able to help you find a cultivar you can grow in Puerto Rico but I really doubt it.  What usually happens with a deciduous (a tree that goes dormant in the winter and sheds its leaves.) tree is that if it is not allowed a dormant, chill period, it will wear itself out and die.  You may be able to grow cherries in the mountains where it is cooler at night.  I don't know.  Contact the authorities at SEA and see what they have to say.  I hope this helps.
Tom
