persimmon seeds and acorns

Question
I picked up some persimmon seeds and acorns around the first of October. I put them in a plastic bag in the fridge. I looked at them yesterday and both are sprouting. What should i do?

      God Bless and Thanks

Answer
Hi James,
Thanx for your question.  I would carefully plant the seeds in separate pots and cover them with soil.  Keep them watered but not soggy in well-draining pots and wait for them to sprout up through the soil.  Keep them in a room that is relatively cool or even a back porch where it won't freeze but remains very cool.  This will slow down their growth without killing them.  You have deciduous trees germinating at the wrong time of year so you want to slow down the growth but not kill the seedlings.  Keeping them very cool will do this.  If they're out on a back porch or in an unheated greenhouse, they will be fine as long as it doesn't freeze and then you can plant them out in the desired location in the spring after the last frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
