QuestionHi I live in the suburbs of philadelphia, I purchased a pomegranate last
year. I take it in at sign of first frost. There are two issues. first is that it
has grown nicely and is around 3 feet, but didn't flower this summer . It's
the second summer and I don't know why. Second is that we have had a
heat wave but this week we had heavy rain and it's cooled down to 65 at
night and 78 during the day, and the leaves are turning yellow and falling.
I know our huge pomegranate in Greece does this obviously, but isn't this
way too early. Today it's 80 and sunny. What's wrong?
AnswerHi Maria,
Thanx for your question. I'm really not a fruit expert but I'll tell you what I know and then I'm going to refer you to the fruit people here on the site. Potted trees require good fertilizing because the nutrients are constantly being leeched out of the soil by your watering or the rain and not replaced (generally). I would side dress the plant with well-composted manure. It doesn't smell and is safe to use. I would also feed the plant with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer in the spring and then follow the directions on the package.
To access our Fruit Experts go back to Home/Gardening and click on Gardening and then Click on Fruit. Nick McCann will be your expert. I hope this helps.
